Feeling a sore throat? The last thing you want to discuss is the fight your immune system gives to defeat the small intruder causing you to feel under the weather. But imagine for a moment the battle inside you- vicious macrophages extending their cell membranes, engulfing and bombarding the invaders with corrupting chemicals, neutrophils sacrificing themselves for the better good of their military formation by bursting open and creating a giant invader trap with their chemical-covered DNA, T-cells rushing to collect as much evidence possible about the invader to construct a winning plan with B-cells, that will destroy the enemy. This isn’t a scene from a sci-fi movie; it’s the incredible reality of your immune system.

Philipp Dettmer is the mastermind behind the beloved YouTube channel Kurzgesagt-In a Nutshell. In his book, he has done something incredible: he breaks down in as much detail as possible the events that occur whenever you feel sick without overwhelming the reader. The book starts with a brief introduction to the immune system (the types of immunity, its evolutionary history, and its purpose). It continues with a description of the events that occur upon infection and concludes with an explanation of autoimmune cancer and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dettmer doesn’t just explain; he makes you feel. You’ll find yourself cheering for your immune cells as they outsmart viruses, booing the ruthless bacteria that try to infiltrate your defenses, and feeling a twinge of awe at the sheer brilliance of how your body keeps you alive, day after day. It’s a front-row seat to the greatest show on Earth—one happening inside you right now.

You probably don’t know, but I am very picky about the books I read, especially regarding editions. I finish books with medium-sized to large letters and images a lot faster. This book is no exception: it is filled with colorful animations that I still remember, small-sized chapters, and great font size for people like me who have difficulty reading a giant-small-lettered book.

However much you love Biology, whether you are an Undergraduate Immunology student, an A-level biology student rushing to take the unit 4 exam, which is filled with the principles of the immune system, or an 8th grader having fun learning new stuff about your body, this book is for you. Immune is not just a book for science buffs; it’s for anyone with a body.

So, grab a copy of Immune, settle in, and prepare to be amazed. This isn’t just a book; it’s a revelation. And trust me, after reading it, you’ll never look at a sneeze the same way again.
