BRNO UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

BASIC INFORMATION:

BRIEF HISTORY:

  • BUT was established in 1899

  • Over 18 100 students are enrolled at 8 faculties and 3 university institutes

  • The motto is Sapere aude which means Have the courage to be wise

  • It was only the second university in the country to receive the prestigious ECTS Label and Diploma Supplement certificate

  • BUT initially offered a single course in civil engineering with only four professors as staff, but soonly opened courses in mechanical, cultural or electrical engineering

  • The school originally carried the name Imperial and Royal Franz Joseph Czech Technical University in Brno as the emperor of that  time founded it

  • After the year 1989, the university was reorganised and in addition to the technical fields focused on chemistry, economy and arts

UNDERGRADUATE COURSES:

  • As at many Czech universities, study programmes in Czech are not paid, while programmes in English are

  • BUT offers courses in English on all eight faculties

  • Some of the most interesting ones are Electrical engineering, International business, Aerospace technology, Geography of global environmental change, Bioinformatics and Biocomputing

  • 1 189 publications in Web of Science database (in 2023)

  • Awards from China High Tech Fair, Eastern European Business Elite Awards, Frost and Sullivan Technology Innovation Award and more

  • 12 research groups from BUT are at CEITEC (Central European Institute of Technology) with the possibilty of Doctoral studies

CAMPUS INFO:

  • Student associations like Erasmus Student Network, International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience are available at BUT

  • The central campus is called Pod Palackého vrchem, where four faculties are situated amongst cafés, student clubs, sports grounds and the largest dormitory

  • All BUT students can sign up for two sports classes per week for free – and additionally, the university has its boathouse

  • Eight libraries all across Brno
