BASIC INFORMATION:

BRIEF HISTORY:

  • Located in Bordeaux 

  • A public multidisciplinary and international research university 

  • Has nearly 54 000 students, including 7600 international students 

  • There are 6000 staff, 3200 of which are lecturer-researchers or researchers

  • The university was founded in 1441 by Pope Eugene IV at the instigation of Pey Berland 

  • It then had 4 faculties: the faculty of medicine, art, law, and theology 

  • After the French Revolution, the university was dismantled in 1793 

  • It was re-established in 1806 

  • From 1881 to 1886, new faculties emerged such as the faculties of letters, sciences, pharmacy, and medicine 

  • Between 1968 and 1970, the university breaks down into 3 major institutions: Bordeaux I ( faculties of science, humanities and politics, law, economics, and management), Bordeaux II (medicine and pharmacy), and Bordeaux III (faculty of letters)

  • Since 2013, the former university structure was restored with the fusion of other institutions such as the Bordeaux Institute of Technology into the now University of Bordeaux

COURSES AND PROGRAMMES

UNDERGRADUATE COURSES:

  • Proposes undergraduate degrees across 47 disciplines including engineering, mathematics, sports management, political science, and midwifery etc. 

  • The international curriculum is available 

  • Offers the possibility for dual degrees with partner institutions around the world 

  • The structure of undergraduate courses includes core modules, electives, and personalized courses: students can make their own coursework 

  • Offers Bachelor degrees as well as University Technical Diploma, and Vocational Bachelors 

  • Students can enroll in work-study programs through apprenticeships

MASTERS AND PhD COURSES:

  • Offers a wide range of Masters degrees in various disciplines 

  • Fields of study include the natural sciences, law, and management, the arts and humanities, medicine, and medical practices 

  • 8 doctoral schools

  • 3 Graduate schools specialized in research

RESEARCH PROGRAMS:

  • Many research partners like the CNRS, INSERM and INRAE 

  • Boasts 11 research departments like Bordeaux Neurocampus for research in neurology 

  • Has 72 research units
